It was about 14 years ago, when I had been practicing social work in Canada for almost a decade, that I heard about a way to combine my love of horses with my commitment to helping other people find their joy and heal their wounds. Equine Assisted therapy was just becoming a treatment modality that had recognition, offered training and I knew it also had some legs! I grew up on horses and they guided me through some of my most challenging times then as an adolescent, and again as an adult and a professional helper as I found my way back to horses in search of something not offered in the traditional office environment. I adopted a slaughter-bound horse and through the course of rehabilitating him, a mean and used-up thoroughbred show jumper, I found myself again in love with horses and started shaping the dream that has become Medicine Horse Ranch. Through my 25 years of service to others I have been blessed to work with diverse communities of people making their way through a variety of challenges and issues. My journey led me toward a specialization in the area of sexual health with a focus on at-risk populations, and counseling, education and advocacy for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
